Courier Tuesday, January 27, 1920 p. 9, col. 7 CAPT. JOHNSTONE WAS WELL KNOWN ON LAKES ------------- CAPT. J. M. JOHNSTONE, marine super- intendent of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., who died last week, was one of the best known navigators on the lakes. Born in Sweden in 1854, CAPT. JOHNSTONE took a job as apprentice on a sailing vessel at the age of twelve years. He became an able seaman in 1870 and shipped on an American vessel coming to the United States. He came on to the Great Lakes in 1872 and took his first berth as wheelsman on a Canadian steamer. He worked his way along gradually and became master of the steamer VANDERBILT in 1877 at the age of twenty-three years. Among other vessels CAPT. JOHNSTONE sailed the steamer TUSCARORA for the Lehigh line, and for several years he was skipper on the steamer WILLIAM EDWARDS in the Richard- son fleet. He joined the Cleveland-Cliffs forces in 1889 and sailed several ships for that company, eventually being made fleet superintendent in 1905. He has many friends in Buffalo. ===========================================================================
