Capt. Levi Mann made several nice wooden anchors and presented them lately as souvenirs to some of his friends. One of the anchors is suspended in the front window to Scott's drug store. Capt. Will Evans was over from Chicago over Sunday. The name of his barge has been changed from "CITY OF ST. JOSEPH" to "S. K. MARTIN." The boat is being overhauled and put in good trim for the season's business. Messrs. John, Adolph, Alfred and H. Mollhagen, Jr., have purchased the fishing tug J. W. HAHN, at Manistique, Mich. The last three mentioned left on Monday for that place and as soon as the harbors are free of ice they will bring her to this place for the coming season's fishing. Capt. Read, of Kenosha, Wis., was in St. Joseph this week looking over the MYOSOTIS. He has arranged to save as much from the vessel as possible, when the ice breaks away from her. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Joseph Herald Saturday, March 24, 1888 [extracts of marine news] Capt. D. W. Lockwood will leave his duties as United States engineer of river and harbor improvements on east shore of Lake Michigan at once, having been ordered to West Point to assume command of Company E, engineer battalion, and instructorship of practical military engineering. Capt. Lockwood is a genial and efficient officer and his Grand Rapids friends will greatly re- gret his departure from their midst. The G. & M. Trans. Co's steamers will be on the route early this spring. Capt. Henry Brown will occupy a position at E. A. Graham & Co's dock the coming season. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- St. Joseph Herald Saturday, March 31, 1888 [extracts of marine news] The Custom House has been formally discontinued at this port. Lighthouse Keeper Platt has the pier light burning again. Mr. Williams' new steamer was successfully launched at South Haven, on Saturday last. It is named H. W. WILLIAMS, after her owner. Her keel is 154 feet, 158 feet over all, 28 beam and 11 hold. ===========================================================================
