McDonald noticed a light on the stern of the craft, and his sur- prise was greatly increased when his attention was called to three balls of fire which lay against the main mast. The passengers swarmed out of the cabins upon the decks, and for a while there was great excitement, the lights growing intense for a time, when they began to die away and disappear altogether. This phenomenon is attributed to wayfaring electricity seeking to escape from an intensely electrified portion of the earth's surface by way of the promient objects like the tops of masts, the heads of persons, the points of spars, and so forth, and is known as St. Elmo's fires. Caeser relates that during the African war, in the month of February, a storm of hail occurred in the second watch of the night, when the spears of the Fifth Legion appeared as if tipped with fire. In 1835 a fine display of this phe- nominon was beheld on board the ROYAL WILLIAM steamship on her passage from London to Leith, during a storm of sleet and wind. Seven balls of fire were seen upon the masts and cross trees, continued visable for an hour, and seemed to hiss like heated iron when plunged into water. So that the phenomenon on the steamer TRUESDELL, though extremely rare, is not unprecedented. At South Haven, Lake Michigan is thirty-five inches lower than normal. John Reed, Captain of the bark JOHN BREDEN, of Chicago, was accidentally drowned in Buffalo Creek recently. Deceased was one of the oldest captains on the lakes. The tug B. W. RICE has been brought to Pentwater by Messrs. Ewing & Conley, and will hereafter ply on the waters of our harbor. She has been thoroughly repaired and refitted throughout, and is in good condition for business. LYMAN & WRIGHT are making preparations for carrying on an exten- sive business at the foot of Fourth street. Their new warehouse is 40 x 70, but it is already well filled. Two new vessels have recently been purchased by the new firm, which were lately owned in Manistee, the bark R. J. SANBORN, and the brig I. M. HILL. These with the scow FLEA, will enable them to keep a full stock on hand, and promptly fill all orders. The SANBORN runs to Milwaukee, the HILL to Chicago, and the FLEA to Milwaukee, returning by Sheboygan and Manitowoc to receive back freights. $50,000 FOR PENTWATER HARBOR We are indebted to Col. Strohman for a copy of the Chicago Times of the 10th inst., containing the following paragraph in regard to Pentwater Harbor; "The Senate committee on commerce has about concluded the consider- ation of the river and harbor bill, and will shortly report it to the Senate. The committee has amended the bill in many important parti- culars, increasing the total amount appropriated by the House several hundred thousand dollars. Through deference to the ***** of Chandler, the chairman, the appropriation for the improvement of the harbor at Penwater, Mich., was increased from $10,000 to $50,000. MARINE REGISTER Arrived. City --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Pentwater News Pentwater, Michigan May 24, 1872 [Marine extracts] NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS Ludington. A disgraceful fight occurred on board the steamer MANISTEE, as she came into our harbor, about eleven o'clock last evening. The particu- lars, as near as we can gather them, are that a difficulty occurred between the Captain and the wheelsman, which resulted in the latter receiving a severe pounding, at the hands of the Captain and Second Mate. An attempt was made to throw the wheelsman overboard, which did not succeed. The tug L. H. BOOLE, of South Haven, has been added to the number prepared for duty at this harbor. The CITY OF TOLEDO, Capt. Morgan, took her place on the East Shore line on Monday. She presents a fine appearance, with her new deck and bright, clean paint. TUG RACE - The captain of the L. H. BOOLE challenged the ELLEN M. O'BRIEN to a race yesterday afternoon, which was accepted. They tested their speed for a distance of about two miles, in Lake Michigan, and the O'BRIEN came out ahead. We are informed that the MANISTEE will be withdrawn from the pre- sent route, unless better patronized. It is a great convenience to have direct steam communication with Milwaukee, and we hope our busi- ness men will sustain the line as liberally as possible. Quite a serious accident occurred to the propeller MESSENGER on Sunday last. While lying at her dock in Sheboygan, a schooner ran into her stern, the bowsprit striking the center just at the lower part of the railing of the middle deck, and coming out nearly up to the smoke stack, tearing a hole through the upper deck three or four feet wide and 25 or 30 feet long. Considerable injury was done to the water pipes and tank, and the damage is estimated at $500. She lost no trips in consequence. Workmen have been engaged in repairing her, and she is now in good shape again. BODY DISCOVERED - Capt. Buchanan, of the scow FLEA, reports having seen the body of a man afloat in the lake, about fifteen miles north of Milwaukee harbor. The letters "P. W." were marked in India ink on his left arm. The head was gone, and beyond a shirt and one shoe there was no clothing on the body. Decomposition had so far advanced that Capt. Buchanan found it impossible to get the body into a boat, as it would fall to pieces. - Mil. News. A CRAFT, 42 x 11 feet, was launched on Tuesday, and is being rigged. The owners do not seem to be particularly proud of the symmetry of the new vessel, and say that she will be called the SLOUCH. MARINE REGISTER Arrived. She resumed her regular trips on Wednesday. The propeller MESSENGER makes the trip between Sheboygan and Pent- water in 5-1/4 hours as a general rule, connecting with the morning train over the Sheboygan & Fond du Lac Railroad, and the night express on the Chicago & Michigan Lake Shore Railroad for all points east. The MANISTEE got on the bar at Manistee on Wednesday night, and was aground three hours. The next morning she got "stuck" on the bar at Ludington, and had to be pulled off by a tug, losing about half an hour. These delays prevented her calling at this port on her return trip. None of the steamers or propellers have had trouble in this harbor, since the first trip early in the spring. THE MANISTEE RUNS DOWN A SCHOONER. - On Friday of last week, the propeller MANISTEE ran into the schooner S. ROBINSON, off Milwaukee. At first it was not realized how seriously the ROBINSON was injured; but soon she commenced to make water, and it being apparent that she was going down, the crew were taken on board the propeller. To decide the fate of the vessel it required but little patience, as she rapidly settled, and soon disappeared altogether. Where she went down the water is very deep, and, being grain loaded, there is little hope of her recovery. The ROBINSON was owned in Chicago, and was valued at about $20,000. Her measurement was 235 tons. The vessel and cargo are insured. The crew lose all their clothing. MARINE REGISTER Arrived.
