I, NO. 17 Friday, 12 May 1871 [extracted marine news] (part of Common Council meeting) MOTION. Motion made and carried that a bill of $36.00 be made out against tug TEMPEST, for damaging light on end of south pier, and placed in the hands of the village Attorney to be presented by him to the cap- tain of said tug for payment, and that said attorney report the re- sult of such presentation to this board at the next meeting. Resolved, that the Harbor Master be and is hereby instructed to immediately establish a red light at the west end of the south pier, and report cost of the same at the next meeting of this board. Said light to be erected the same as the one destroyed by tug TEMPEST, and to be similar in construction and cost. The tug WILLIAMS, from Manistee, with a party of sight-seers, went to Portage last Monday, steamed up through the channel cut by the rushing waters of the lake, without difficulty. We learn that the steamer MESSENGER also on her last trip, went into Portage Lake and returned through the channel without encountering any obstruction. HARBOR CONTRACT. - We are happy to announce that James Corlett and Henry Hurley, of this village, have been awarded the contract for the Government work on our harbor this year. The contract embraces the building of a pier head on the north pier 30x30, putting down a pile revetment from the south end of the south pier to the shore, and removing all of the old slab pier that is in the line of the re- vetment. Messrs. Corlett and Hurley also furnish all the requisite material for the above work, including stone for filling the piers. We are glad the contract has been awarded to honest, capable men, and shall expect that before the season is over our harbor will be greatly improved. We understand that a light-house will be established here by the Government as soon as the extension of the piers is completed. MARINE REGISTER. PORT OF PENTWATER (Reported for the News by Ed. E. VOL. I, NO. 18 Friday, 19 May 1871 [extracted marine news] The new harbor at Portage Lake is named Williamsport in honor of the tug WILLIAMS, which was the first to enter. Dr. Ellis has started a ferry across Manistee Lake for teams. Mr. GILLET, clerk of the "METROPOLIS," informs us that the shingle mill of C. Mears at Hamlin was burning as the boat passed by Saturday morning, and is doubtless a total loss. News from Grand Haven: The Side Wheel Steamer "MUSKEGON" is now receiving the boilers of the "Orion." She will be placed on the Goodrich line July 1. The repairing of the break in the Erie Canal was finished on the 10th, and there was sufficient water to move light boats. MARINE REGISTER PORT OF PENTWATER (Reported for the News by Ed. E. I, NO. 19 Friday, 26 May 1871 [extracted marine news] The Barge "D. L. FILER," was successfully launched last Saturday. It will carry 400,000 feet of lumber, and is one of three barges built this season by Tyson & Robinson. An excursion after the launch is described as follows: "All went merry as the marriage bells till Lake Michigan was reached. Here many experienced more than their tickets called for, and they were gloriously "rocked in the cradle of the deep," much in opposition to the repose of their digestive apparatus. Being quite free of ballast, the vessel pranced about on the crest of the breakers like a stormy petrel at play. There being nothing to which the amateur mariners might cling, a great many were constrained to occupy berths on deck, without particular regard to locality or position. It is superfluous to remark that the music did not to the graceful tossings of the barge keep time, for the "lay" of the last minstrel was heard in doleful groans near a partially disclosed hatch- way. No more pleased was the prophet Jonah when cast up on dry land than were this happy band on their return to the harbor. To them will cling forever the remembrance of the rocking by Neptune of Manistee's firstborn child of the wave - the barge D. L. FILER." . . . . Nearly 300 went on an excursion from Manistee to Portage Harbor last week. The 'MANISTEE' goes to Detroit to have 30 feet added to her length. She will be gone about six weeks. ALONG THE SHORE: Frankfort - Government work on the harbor has begun. . . One of the citizens has purchased a tig; so the "RICHARDS" returns to Pentwater. Saugatuck - A beautiful mirage was lately seen. The Commercial says: "We are told that the Western Shore of Lake Michigan and the city of Racine were plainly seen. Standing on the Bald Head, that afternoon, one counted a hundred and fifty vessels, nearly all standing to the northward. It was a scene as rare as it was beautiful. Probably no man ever before saw so many vessels together off this port." The little steamer "KATY REID" put in an appearance on Thursday evening. She came from Grand Haven, and is bound for *****, where she will be offered for sale. "Time and Tide waits for no man." and Englemann's boats might well be classified in the same list. Last Saturday a passenger of trusting disposition waited on the dock after "All aboard" had been shouted, doubtless thinking that they wouldn't dare leave without him. "Haul in the plank," sternly uttered, brought him to a realizing sense of his condition, and he started for the gangway. Just as he placed his foot upon the plank, it was jerked from beneath him by two stalwart deck- hands, and the next minute he was on his way to test by actual measurement the depth of water in Pentwater Harbor. Before he had reached the bottom, some one interfered with his plans by catching him by the ear, and he concluded to defer further operations until a more favorable opportunity should present itself.
