XII, No. 47 WHOLE NO. 359 - The Propeller MANISTEE came into our harbor last Sunday heavily loaded with freight. Shortly after passing the end of the pier, she dragged heavily on something in the bottom of the river, and immediately began to fill with water. She was tied up to Canfield's dock and her pumps set to work, but the water came in faster than they could pump it out. The Fire Engine went to her assistance, and was got to work when the water was within three inches of the fire. After working all night, the water was pumped out, and the freight unloaded. An examination showed that one of the bottom planks was broken, caused by running on to the engine of the pile- driver, burned at the time of the great fire. A cog wheel belong- ing to the engine was found sticking in the hole. As there are several wrecks in the river caused by the fire, it would be well for the proper authorities to look into the matter before further damage is done. This engine that has caused so much damage and trouble to the MANISTEE, should be removed at once. The wreck of the SENECA CHIEF lies in a position where it is liable to do damage, and there is considerable of debris near the bridge that should be removed. Not at some future time, but now, before further damage or inconvenience is caused by it. ===========================================================================
