The Nessen Transportation Co. now operating the steamer MANISTEE between Ludington, Manistee and Mil- waukee announces that they will run their steamer all winter. Such a feat will require ice break- ing such as has not before been at- tempted. Their landing place at this port is at the Northern Mich. dock at the foot of James street. To get to this dock will require the breaking of ice above the track of the car-ferries and where it has never be- fore been kept open. At Manistee the harbor has always become unnavigable by heavy ice and the fact that there are no car ferries there to keep it broken up will mean a heavy task to make that port in severe weather. ------------------------------------- The government dredge GEN. GEL- ESPIE has been in port during the past week finishing up the work of dredg- ing the harbor and lowering the bar north of the piers. This is the last work to be done by the boat this fall. As soon as the new wheels arrive for the propeller the GILLESPI will go to Milwaukee to have them adjusted. She will go into winter quarters in Grand Haven. -------------------------------------- Local Items: - The barge MARSHALL F. BUTTERS took on a load of bulk salt for Waukegon Monday. - Pere Marquette carferry 16, which has been in service on Lake Erie ar- rived Thursday afternoon about four o'clock and will probably be laid up here for the winter. ==============================================
