MARINE DISASTERS Record of Disasters on the Lakes During the Season of 1871. (From the Detroit Weekly Union) Capt. Hall, marine reporter, has compiled a list of marine disasters on the lakes during the season of 1871, from which we gather the fol- lowing facts. The total number of disasters during the year was 1,167, as follows: Collisions..................... 225 Went ashore.................... 280 Sprung a leak.................. 132 Burned......................... 31 Capsized....................... 26 Foundered...................... 19 Water-logged................... 65 Dismasted...................... 60 Exploded....................... 10 Losses of a minor character.... 319 The numerous instances of steam- ers and vessels grounding at the Flats and elsewhere, have not been included in the above, except where damage in the hull or outfit has been sustained. We give below a list of the more important disasters, attended either by great loss to the vessel or loss of life: FEBRUARY. Schooner MINNIE DUKE, wrecked against ice-banks on Black Lake, L. M.; total loss. MARCH. Prop FLORENCE, burned at Malden Loss $5,000; repaired Sloop EMMA, capsized off St. Jo- seph, L. M., all hands lost. Stmr IROQUOIS burned at Lachine. Total loss; valued at $10,000. The barge KEEPSAKE, lost in Lake Huron her deck load, 50,000 feet of lumber. APRIL Tug S V R WATSON, sunk at Chicago while towing, and four lives lost. Tug SATELITE, capsized while tak- ing in tow the bark J C KING, and one life lost. The tug got into port. Schr THOMAS KINGSFORD, sunk by ice near Waugachance, with a car- go of corn, total loss. Schrs PEARL and NINA went ashore at Napanee, Lake Ontario, and each became a total loss. Barges RESOLUTE and DEFIANCE lost 250,000 feet of lumber in a storm on Lake Ontario. Prop MICHIGAN went ashore on Long Point Cut, jettisoned 160 bbls of flour and got off. Life boat capsized and eight men drowned at Fort Niagara, Lake On- tario. The barges UNITED and STOCKTON lost deck-loads of lumber in Lake Huron. MAY Schr STRANGER sunk by ice at Su- perior City; total loss. Tugs LITTLE EASTER and COLEMAN each lost a raft in Saginaw Bay. A boat, with three men in it passed over Niagara Falls. Stmr WAVE lost a raft of 16 cribs in Saginaw Bay. Tug B B JONES exploded at Port Huron dock, and eight lives lost; vessel a total loss. A sailing yacht capsized off Michi- gan City, and one man drowned. A sailing yacht foundered near Cleveland, and three persons drown- ed. Stmr HURON burned in Beauhar- nais Canal, and one life lost. Dredge scow capsized at Buffalo; total loss. JUNE Schr PIONEER sunk off Presque Isle, Lake Ontario; total loss. Schr FEARLESS capsized off Mount Minery; captain, wife and child lost. Schr ST. LAWRENCE by being crowd- ed on piles at Chicago. Bark MAITLAND sunk in the Straits by collision with schr GOLDEN HAR- VEST, total loss. Prop PHILADELPHIA run a boat down and drowned two men at Erie. Steamer VICTORIA burned at Lind- say, Lake Ontario; total loss - $12,- 000. Capt. Smith's dredge burned on Saginaw River; total loss. Prop ALEX. WATSON burned at Lambton, St. Clair River; total loss. Prop MAINE exploded her boiler near Ogdensburg; four person killed. JULY Schr CASTALIA went ashore at Cove Island; total loss. Schr MARY E. BURGOYNE burned at Hanford's Landing, Lake Ontario; total loss. Scow ADVANCE, cargo of coal, sunk near Green Island; total loss. Tug GEN. LYON exploded at San- dusky, total loss. Prop J. BARBER burned on Lake Michigan; total loss with two lives. Scow FOREST HUNTER sunk at Port Huron. A boat with two men passed over Niagara Falls. Schr J. R. NEWHOUSE burned in Traverse Bay; total loss. AUGUST Tug JOHN MARTIN lost a raft on Lake Huron in a gale. Schr STELLA waterlogged in Lake Michigan, and eight lives lost. Barge BAY CITY waterlogged and lost deck-load of lumber on Lake Huron. Schr WINFIELD SCOTT waterlogged off Spider Island; total loss. Schr SKYLARK (No 2) sunk at Port Stanley. Brig GEORGE M. ABELL sunk at Pt. Burwell; total Loss. Scow MAGGIE, cargo of lumber sunk near Goderich; total loss. Barge FORESTER lost her deck-load in Lake Erie. Schr ROSA STEARNS, cargo of coal, struck on the Cleveland piers and sunk; total loss. SEPTEMBER Schr NEW LONDON, cargo of staves rolled over in Lake Erie and sunk; total loss. Barge FORESTER lost her deck-load of lumber in Lake Erie. Bark W. H. VANDERBILT, ashore at Grosse Point, Lake Michigan; cargo of grain lost. Schr J. C. HARRISON, ashore at Point Abino; cargo of grain dam- aged. Schr BARKALOW, cargo of grain, sunk in same place; got into port. Schr MIRANDA, cargo of lumber, sunk on Port Austin reef; total loss. Schr UNION, cargo of brick, sunk off Sheboygan; total loss. Barges ST. CLAIR, RITCHIE and OCEAN, lost deck-loads of lumber in Lake Huron. Schr CLYDE sunk at Big Sodus; total loss. Bark A. STEVENS damaged $5,000 by collision with schr MIAMI in Lake Ontario. Schr DAN TINDALL, cargo of lum- ber, ashore at Northport; total loss. Schr FRANKFORT, cargo of lumber, ashore at Richmondville; total loss. Tug HELEN MORRIS sunk in Kala- mazoo River. Brig LOWELL, cargo of lumber, ashore near Cove Island; total loss. Barges ROBY and REGULATOR, car- goes of hay, burned in Detroit River; total losses. Schr C. H. HURD, cargo of corn, foundered in Lake Michigan; total loss; crew all lost except the cap- tain. Schr LUCY J. LATHAM sunk in Welland Canal by collision. Prop NEBRASKA, cargo of wheat, badly damaged by fire at Chicago. Barge Waverly sunk at Cleveland. Small schr MIRANDA, water-logged off Michigan City; crew all lost. Barge ROBIN, cargo of wheat, sunk in Galoo Rapids. Prop FREE STATE, cargo of grain and flour, sunk on White Shoals; total loss. FAIRCHILD, cargo of wheat sunk in Lake Erie above Long Point by collision with the schr HARVEST HOME, total loss. Schr GEM, cargo of coal, ashore in Pigeon Bay; total loss. Schr MAJOR ANDERSON, cargo of railroad iron, ashore at Two Rivers, total loss. Barks GLENBEULAH, VALETTA, FON- TANELLE, and schrs STAMPEDE, C. NILL- SON, ALMIRICK; destroyed by Chicago fire. Schr VICTORIA, cargo of grain, ashore on Fords Shoals; total loss. Schr W. S. LYONS, sunk on White Shoals; total loss. Schr R. P. MASON, cargo of sup- plies, ashore near Leland; total loss. Schr SENECA CHIEF, destroyed by Manistee fire; total loss. Schr L. VAN VALKENBURG; ashore at Presque Isle, Lake Huron, jetti- soned 3,000 bus; got off. Tug DISPATCH, ashore with five barges at Port Austin; latter saved, tug total loss. Prop DUNKIRK, lost a tow of bar- ges in Saginaw Bay; recovered. Prop JENNESS, lost a tow of bar- ges in Saginaw Bay; recovered. Prop LOWELL ashore on Long Point threw over 500 bbls flour and 100 bbls pork, got off. Schr J. S. MINOR, cargo of oats, ashore near Kincardine; total loss. Schr D. FERGUSON, cargo wheat, ashore same place; cargo total loss; vessel off. Prop R. G. COBURN, with a valuable cargo from Lake Superior, foundered in Saginaw Bay, with a loss of about 45 lives, including her captain; total loss. Schr EXCELSIOR, cargo wheat, foundered on Lake Huron, all lost save one. Schr JOHN BURT (new), wrecked at Leland, Lake Michigan; total loss. Schr GEO. J. WHITNEW, cargo coal, of Sugar Island, Lake Huron; total loss. Prop EMPIRE, on Point au BAR- QUES, jettisoned and got off. Schr PLOVER, cargo of wheat, sunk on Lake Superior; total loss. Schr LUCY AUCHARD, cargo of poles ashore at Port Albert, Lake Huron; total loss. Schr CASCADIA, ashore near Cape Hurd, Lake Huron; total loss. Schr W. COURTWRIGHT, cargo of lumber, ashore near Racine; total loss. Schr JULIETTE, foundered off Madi- son, Ohio; all on board lost except the cook; vessel a total loss. Brig SAXON, ashore at Long Point, Lake Erie; total loss. Brig C. J. HUTCHISON, sunk on Ken- osha pier; total loss. Scow H. G. WILLIAMS struck a pier in Cleveland harbor and sunk; two lives lost. Bark TWILIGHT, struck a rock and sunk of Rock Falls, Lake Huron; eight lives lost; a total loss. Schr ELI BATES foundered in Lake Erie with nine lives; total loss. Prop PHIL SHERIDAN damaged by fire at Bay City; not severe. Schr ILLINOIS, lumber, deserted by her crew and waterlogged on Lake Michigan. Schr JESSIE ANDERSON, grain, went down with all hands off Long Point Ont.; total loss. Schrs NEWSBOY, coal, and E. B. ALLEN, grain, collided off Thunder Bay, Lake Huron; latter sunk and a total loss.
