NO 15 Whole No. 119 [extracts of marine news] No season in the history of shipping has ever equalled the present for dullness. Vessel men are gloomy enough. The body of a woman was found floating in the St. Clair river near Port Huron Monday morning, which is supposed to be that of Mrs. Gifford, cook of the ill-fated schooner CLAYTON BELLE. The body was incompletely dressed, and there was a ring on the second finger of the right hand. The docks at Mackinac Island are in a horrible state and fast crumbling to decay. If the folks there don't look out the boats will soon be sailing right by that place, because the docks are dangerous to land at. Marine ------ Business was dull on the river Tuesday. The MARY keeps regular time on the Mackinac route. A large fleet was sheltered here Tuesday, upward bound. The schr. MONTPELIER cleared for Chicago Monday afternoon. The schr. RISING STAR passed up Tuesday from Hammonds Bay. The TOLEDO was in bound down Monday afternoon at Duncan City. The ATLANTIC cleared half an hour ahead of time going down Tuesday. The river is running full of logs, making navigation in the river difficult. The schrs. LUCY J. CLARK, and LOTTIE WOLF passed up Tuesday after- noon. The steambarge GEO. KING came in Sunday and loaded lumber for Buffalo. The ATLANTIC was in Tuesday morning and went down in the afternoon. She had lots of freight. The schr. PARANA came in Sunday, loaded with lumber for Thompson Smith and departed Wednesday for Chicago. The tug BENNETT has been undergoing minor repairs this week. She is the only wrecking tug now in the harbor. The boats are having a hard time paying expenses this season. We do not believe a single boat on the shore line has paid a cen profit. The NASHUA seems to be the favorite freight boat this season. She has had to refuse freights on her down trip several times and has loads engaged for three trips ahead. She carries cedar posts and ties going down. The schooner ROBERT HALLORN, from Toledo ran ashore on the white shoals in the straits Saturday and was released by the tug SWEEP- STAKES. The steam barges ALLEGHANY and BURLINGTON worked at her also. She was coal laden for Chicago and part of her cargo was jettisoned. The contractors are still working upon the wreck of the NORTHERN QUEEN and have had all kinds of luck but good ever since they began; but yesterday it was believed that enough chains had been got under her to take her from the bed as soon as the sea calmed down. It may be possible that she will be raised before this paper goes to press. We hope so, as it has been an eyesore to this people. - Manistique Pioneer. If anybody wants to know why the chair at the head of the Captain's table on the steamer FLORA is so much nicer than any other captain's chair on the lakes, tell him that that is no "steam boat property," but the private chair of Capt. W. E. Comer, just fitted for his "breath of beam" which is considered by Capt. Grummond worthy of being done up in mahogany on account of the head over it. It was a present last night about midnight and a happy surprise to the worthy recipient. - Marine News. ===========================================================================
