Captain Joseph Pease of Oswego lost with her. Schooner "ISAAC G. JENKINS", 327 G.T., built 1873 at Algonac, Mich. Foundered near Oswego Nov. 30, 1875 with all hands. All hands were from Oswego. She was named after an Oswego man. Schooner "CORNELIA", 101 G.T., built 1880 at Clayton, N.Y. and the last of the Oswego owned schooner. Was abandoned 1912. Schooner "LEM. ELLSWORTH," 340 G.T., built 1874 at Milwaukee, Wis. Foundered with all hands Lake Michigan near Waugaschonse, 1894. Schooner "GRANADA", 239 G.T., built 1856 at Buffalo. Lost at Mackinaw 1873. Schooner "JOHN BURT", 348 G.T., built 1871 at Detroit. Foundered while at anchor off Big Sandy, east of Oswego Sept. 26, 1892. Several of crew lost. This vessel had lost her rudder in a gale bound for Oswego from Chicago. Canadian schooner "BAVARIA", 361 N.T., built 1878 at Garden Island, Ontario. Lost on Galoo Island 1889. Canadian schooner "T. K. MERRITT", 400 N.T., built 1874 at Port Dalhousie, Ontario. Ashore and lost 9 miles west of Oswego 1900 on the same day the Canadian schooner ALBACORE went on the fort bank at Oswego. Schooner "JOHN BIGLER", 344 G.T., built 1866 at Detroit, Lost on Lake Superior 1884. Was owned by George C. Finney of Chiago who had operated a ship-chandler business in Oswego at one time. Schooner "J. B. PENFIELD", named for an Oswego man. Later the A. E. VICKERY for another Oswego man, was 383 G.T., built at Three Mile Bay, N.Y. Schooner "HUNGARIAN", 363 G.T., built 1853 at Three Mile Bay, N.Y. Her last document surrendered at Chicago Nov. 15, 1880 and endorsed "Vessel a total loss." Schooner "DANE", 361 G.T., built 1857 at Three Mile Bay, N.Y. for Thomas S. Mott of Oswego and was wrecked 1871. The schooner "SAMANA" was built on her bottom at Oswego 1873. Lost as barge near Cleveland 1892. Schooner "NORWEGIAN", 390 G.T., built 1856 at Three Mile Bay, N.Y. for Mott. Lost on Lake Ontario near Oswego 1870. Schooner "J. C. RIGGS", 171 G.T., built 1852 at Dexter, N.Y. Broken up at Oswego 1862. The schooner "THOMAS MARTIN" was built on her bottom. Schooner "JOHN S. PARSONS", 115 G.T., built 1891 at Chaumont, N.Y. A 3-master was converted to steam boat 1895, then was 180 G.T. Later a tow-barge of 204 G.T.Foundered off Oswego fall of 1913. Schooner "SAMUEL J. HOLLEY", 213 G.T., built 1855 at Milan, Ohio by Ruggles, named for an Oswego man. Owned by Thomas Mott at one time. She was abandoned at Milwaukee 1888 as unfit for service. Schooner "OSTERICH", 279 G.T., built 1856 at Buffalo. Foundered with all hands on Lake Michigan near the Manitous 1892. Had belonged to Mott at one time. Schooner "S. H. LATHROP", 278 G.T. built 1856 at Buffalo for Mott and named for an Oswego man. Was abandoned on beach near Alpena, Mich. Schooner "ADA MEMBRAY", 85 G.T., built 1884 at Sacketts Harbor. Ashore and broke up at Oswego 1885. Schooner "MARY BALLARD", 288 G.T. built 1885 at Cleveland. Foundered on Lake Ontario 1866 with all hands, Capt. John Coyne, master. Schooner "J. B. KITCHEN", 287 tons, 132.8 x 26.8 x 9.5, built at Cleveland by Qualey and Murphy. FILER", 237 tons, 128.9 x 27.5 x 9, built at Chicago by William Bates 1874. Dismantled and abandoned 1930. Hulk dynamited in Belleville 1937. Schooner "J. B. NEWLAND", 157 tons, 114 x 26.2 x 7.7, built Manitowac (sic) 1870 by Henderson. Sank near Kingston 1918 or 1919. Schooner "STUART H. DUNN", of Kingston, Ont., 458 tons, 164 x 26 x 12.5, originally the "W. R. TAYLOR", built by George Dixon at Cooper's Dock in South Bay, Ont. Was driven ashore about 1888 and was recovered and rebuilt as the "STUART H. DUNN". About 1910 the "DUNN" was reduced to the status of a tow-barge, and in 1925 she sank in Whitby Harbor. Canadian schooner "DAVID ANDREWS", later "DELAWARE", 165 N.T., built South Bay, Ont. 1872. She went ashore at Oswego 1889. Schooner "JUNIUS OF OSWEGO", 216 tons, built at Kingstons, Ont. 1845. Foundered off Long Point, Lake Erie 1866, on her way to coast with a cargo of walnut lumber. Schooner "MILAN", 147 tons, built Three Mile Bay, N.Y. 1845. Foundered off Oak Orchard, Lake Ontario 1849. Canadian bark "SIR EDMUND HEAD", 338 N.T., built St. Catherines, Ont. 1856. Lost on Lake Erie 1870, 4 lives lost. Built by Louis Shickluna. Canadian bark "LAURA E. She was driven ashore 1888 and recovered and rebuilt as the Canadian schooner STUART H. DUNN. Canadian schooner "LORETTA ROONEY", ex-MARY TAYLOR, 184 N.T., built 1866 at Kingston. Finally abandoned and broken up. Schooner "A. J. DEWEY", 237 G.T., built 1875 at Henderson, N.Y. by Reed. Abandoned 1896. Schooner "JAMES WADE", 273 G.T., built 1867 at Henderson by Reed. Foundered off Long Point. Lake Erie with all hands 1883. Schooner "C. G. MIXER", 294 G.T., built 1867 at Henderson by Reed. Ashore and lost on Lake Michigan 1894. Schooner "GEORGE WEEKS", 117 G.T., built 1845 at Peninsula, N.Y. Had been owned in Oswego. Lost at Pere Marquette, (now Ludington), Lake Michigan 1855. Schooner "POLLY M. ROGERS", 328 G.T., built 1870 at Charlotte, N.Y. Ashore and lost on Pigeon Island, Lake Ontario 1890. Schooner "WATERTOWN", 308 G.T., built 1874 at Chaumont, N.Y. Was sold to Canada and went ashore and lost on Lake Ontarion 1890. Then owned in Kingston. Schooner "W. R. TAYLOR", later the "STUART H. DUNN", 535 N.T. built 1877 by George Dixon at Cooper's Dock at South Bay, Ont., Lake Ontario. She was driven ashore 1888, recovered and rebuilt as Canadian schooner "STUART H. DUNN". About 1909 cut down to a tow- barge, and sunk in the harbor at Whitby, Ont. where her bones remain. She was one of the last vessels on the lakes to still carry square top-sail and raffey. She was a three-master, and had a straight stem with ports in her bows and stern for loading heavy timbers which she carried from Toledo to Garden Island, Ont. for ship building purposes at Calvin's Shipyard near Kingston. This type of vessel was known as a "timber drover" and she was a fine vessel. Steamer "RUSSEL SAGE", 1224 G.T., built in 1881 at Buffalo as a package freighter for the Wabash Railroad who sold her in 1906 and was cut down to a lumber steamer and later a tow-barge. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -209- VESSELS FAMILIAR TO OSWEGO AND WHERE THEY WERE LOST OR ABANDONED. Schooner "ARTHUR", ex-schooner "G. C. TRUMFF", 335 G.T., built 1873 at Manitowac (sic), Wis. and sold to Canadians, then sold to parties on coast during World War 1. She foundered at sea, Oct. 7, 1919 off Labrador coast. Passenger steamer "CITY OF OSWEGO", 350 tons by O. M., built 1852 at Buffalo. Sunk by steamer "AMERICA" on Lake Erie, 1852 in the first year, 15 lives lost. Steamer "NICARAGUA", 1201 G.T., built 1894 at West Bay City, Mich. by James Davidson who sold her to John Hannan in Ogdensburg, 1905, for $29,500. Later sold to Canadians and abandoned 1920. Schooner "TRANCHEMONTAGUE", 171 tons by O. M. Lost at Oswego 1880 when she hit the pier there. Was built 1864 at Sorel, Quebec by Tranchemontague. Passenger steamer "OLCOTT", ex-LAKESIDE, 337 G.T., built 1901 at Toledo by Craig. Sold to France World War 1. Was converted to tug at Staten Island, N.Y. and renamed "HURON" before leaving for France. Canadian steamer "CONGER COAL", ex-American "A. WESTON", 511 G.T., built 1882 Mt. Clemons, Mich. Burned up at Fair Haven, N.Y. April 1917. Was then owned in Picton, Ont. Schooner "SYRACUSE", foundered in Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron 1859. Schooner "J. C. RIGGS", 171 tons O. M., built 1852 at Dexter, N.Y. Broke up at Oswego 1862. The RIGGS had been ashore at Cleve- land in 1856. The schooner "THOMAS MARTIN" was built on her bottom at Oswego in 1862. Schooner "HANNA BUTLER", 126 tons O. M., built 1856 in Coburg, Ont. She foundered off Salmon Point, Lake Ontario, Nov. 26. 1887 while bound from Wellington, Ont. to Oswego. Schooner "W. T. GREENWOOD", 144 N.T., built 1867 at Port Dal- housie, Ont. Steamer "PERSEVERANCE", 450 N.T. built 1864 at Port Dalhousie, Ont. Burned up on Lake Ontario near Oswego 1868, 14 lives lost. Passenger steamer "OCEAN WAVE", burned up off Duck Islands, Lake Ontario 1853, 28 lives lost. Bound from Hamilton to Ogdensburg. Schooners "GEORGIANA" and "EMBLEM" picked up 21 passengers. Schooner "PICTON", 181 N.T., built 1867 at Picton, Ont. Foundered on Lake Ontario 1900, 6 lives lost. Schooner "OCEAN WAVE", 96 N.T. built 1868 at Picton, Ont. Capsized 15 miles off Oswego 1890. All hands lost. Schooner "FRED L. WELLS", 80 G.T., built 1875 at New Jerusalem, Ohio, Went ashore and lost four miles east of Oswego 1904. Propeller "BUCKEYE", built 1856 at Cleveland, 378 G. T. Ashore and burned on Manitoulin Island, Georgian Bay, Lake Huron 1885. Steamer "NIAGARA", built at Clayton 1845, 473 tons. Went to East Coast 1863 and name changed to "SUFFOLK". Steamer "CATARACT", built at Clayton 1847, 577 tons. Sold to Canadian interest in 1871 and her engines removed. Steamer "ONTARIO", built at Clayton 1847 at a cost of $80,000, came out in 1848. Sold to Royal Mail Line who in turn sold her to Canadian interest in 1873 for Montreal to Quebec run. Steamer "BAY STATE", built at Clayton 1849, 935 tons. Was also sold to above people for the same run. Steamer "NEW YORK", built at Clayton 1852, 994 tons. Sold to parties on East coast and ran Bangor to Boston. Chartered to government during the War of the Rebellion. Was still running between Boston and Portland 1875. The above boats were all built for the Ontario Steamboat Co. Steamer "ARAGON", built of iron in Wyandotte, Mich. 1896, 1450 G. T., 261 x 50. Owned by C. R. Went aground near Point Ann, Belleville, Ont. 1963 when she was abandoned. Was scrapped in 1964. Canadian schooner "ADRIADNE", lost November 1896 near Stony Point, N.Y. in a gale of wind and snow. Capt. Sutherland McKay, his son Hugh of Toronto and two crew members were lost. They were Edward Mulligan of Greenbush and Charles Dean of Shannonville. Thomas Cox and Maurice Young of Toronto were saved when they were picked up by the lifeboat crew at Stony Point. Canadian schooner "HORACE L. TABER", 133 x 27 x 9'3, built at St. Clair, Mich. 1867, as the three masted schooner "AMOSKEAG". She was lost at Four Mile Point, Simcoe Island, November 1, 1922. The little sloop "BLACK DUCK", 21 tons, was owned at Sacketts Harbor, N.Y. She left Cape Vincent July 26, 1872 and on her way across the lake foundered in Mexico Bay and went to pieces. It has been reported that she carried a cargo of whiskey, but the records in the National Archives and Records Service, Washington, D. C. say that the loss to the vessel was $600,000, that there was no loss of life or cargo. OUR SON - LAST SCHOONER ON THE UPPER LAKES The schooner "OUR SON", L.185', W.35', D.12', was built in Ohio in 1875. In 1923, after years of service as a tow-barge, the old schooner "OUR SON" was re-rigged in jury fashion and sailed again on her own for seven more years in the pulpwood trade between Canada and Muskegon, Mich. Her stubby rig was a far cry from the spread of canvas she carried in 1875, when she was built at Black River, Ohio. At that time, she crossed three yards on her foremast and was said to carry more sail than any other schooner on the lakes. A few minutes after her crew was taken off by a helping steamer her bottom fell out. LYMAN M. DAVIS - LAST SCHOONER ON LAKE ONTARIO & GREAT LAKES The schooner "LYMAN M. DAVIS", 195 tons, was built at Muskegon, Mich. in 1873 by Arnold. For sixty years [the] famous schooner sailed the Great Lakes. In her last years she was engaged in the coal trade to Kingston, Ont., her latest home port. The LYMAN M. DAVIS was the last of her type on the Great Lakes. She was burned as a spectacle at Sunnyside Beach, Toronto, Ontario in 1933. ===========================================================================
