HALL, Marine Reporter at Detroit. --------------------------- DETROIT: Free Press and Job Printing Establishment. 1872 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -20- MARINE DISASTERS OF 1871 The number of Marine disasters on the Northern Lakes during the sea- son of 1871, so far as known, was 1,167. Of this number, 225 were caused by collisions, 280 vessels went ashore, 31 were burned, 26 cap- sized, 19 foundered, 132 sprang aleak, 65 waterlogged, 60 were dis- masted, 110 lost deck-loads, and 10 exploded their boilers. There were also other disasters of a minor character, which are not included in the above enumeration unless serious damage to hull or outfit was sustained. The following is a list of the more important disasters. FEBRUARY Schooner MINNIE DUKE (sic), wrecked against ice banks in Black Lake, Lake Michigan; total loss. Tug JOHN MARTIN, sunk while lying at dock in Detroit; raised. Schooner HIBBARD, lost a portion of her sails between St. Joseph and Chicago. Propeller MANISTEE, ashore near Milwaukee; got off with slight damage MARCH Propeller FLORENCE, burned at Malden at the dock; damage about $5,000 repaired. The schooners M. WILLIAMS, LIVE YANKEE, W. FISKE, RACINE, HYPHEN, FLORETTA, SWALLOW, T. J. BRONSON, LEADER, REINDEER, INVINCIBLE, D. MORRIS, and barges GENESEE CHIEF and RUSSELL, all had sails and outfit burned at the fire of Hoffner & Mayes' sail-loft, Detroit. Tug GEN. BURNSIDE, started aleak and sunk at Port Huron; raised and repaired. Propeller LAKE BREEZE, burst a steam pipe at Bay City, scalding two men. Sloop EMMA, capsized off St. Joseph, Lake Michigan; all hands lost. Steamer IROQUOIS, burned at Lachine; loss $10,000. Propeller ROBERTS, struck a pile at Mooretown; lost her wheel and shaft. Schooner UNION, struck Milwaukee pier and sunk inside; raised. Schooner GEORGE OSCAR, lost an anchor and chain between Sheboygan and Manistee. Steamer HURON, ashore in Sarnia Bay; got off after three days' detention. HARRISON, ashore at Grassy Island; lightered off. Tug O. L. NIMS, broke her wheel in the ice near Buffalo. Tuff (sic) FRANK PEREW, lost pilot-house while towing vessels near Buffalo. Barge KEEPSAKE, lost 50,000 feet of lumber in Lake Huron. Schooner A. W. LUCKY, lost horn and bowsprit chains on Lake Ontario. APRIL Tug S. V. R. WATSON, sunk at Chicago while towing schooner DICK SOMERS; no lives lost. Schooner HATTIE JOHNSON, ashore at Mackinaw; got off at an expense of $800. Propeller barge BAY CITY, partially burned at Bay City; repaired. Schooner H. C. POST, dismasted at Port Huron by collision with schooner A. MOSHER. Tug SATELLITE, capsized while taking in tow bark J. C. KING; one life lost; tug got into port. Schooner THOMAS KINGSFORD, sunk by ice near Waugoschance; a total loss. Schooner W. J. WHALING, ashore at St. Helena, cargo plaster; threw over 100 tons, and got off. Schooner RALEIGH, off Kenosha, lost mainmast and rigging, and drifted to East Shore. Schooner FALCON, lost her anchors at Vander's pier, Lake Michigan. Schooner JULIA SMITH, lost her anchors the same time and place. Schooners REINDEER and L. VAN VALKENBURG collided at the mouth of the Detroit River; the latter damaged. Schooner J. W. NICHOLS, cargo of stone; starboard bow stove in at Chicago. Scow bark LEWIS DAY, struck a rock at Death's Door and waterlogged. Schooner W. F. ALLEN, collided with bark MAJOR ANDERSON at Bar Point; the former badly damaged. Steamer SAGINAW, broke her wheels by ice at Escanaba. Bark NELSON, sprung aleak on Lake Michigan; repaired. Tug A. M. BELL, burst her heater on Lake Michigan. Schooner PEARL, ashore at Nepaunee, Lake Ontario; a total loss. Schooner NINA, ashore at Nepaunee, Lake Ontario; a total loss. Tug ALBION, lost a raft of timber of Luddington (sic). Propeller MOHAWK, exploded her pony boiler at Buffalo; damage $500. Barges RESOLUTE and DEFIANCE lost 250,000 feet of lumber on Lake Ontario. Schooner PAULINE, damaged $600 by collision with steamer VAN EPPS at Chicago. Steamer CLINTON, broke her shaft; replaced at Detroit. Propeller MICHIGAN, ashore at Long Point Cut; jettisoned 160 barrels of flour, and got off. Life boat capsized, and eight men drowned, at Fort Niagara, Lake Ontario. Schooner H. C. POST collided with schooner JESSIE ANDERSON, both damaged. Schooner JESSIE ANDERSON, grounded at Port Huron; lightered off. Bark LOTTIE WOLF, lost topmasts on Lake Huron, bound down. Propeller J. L. HURD, aground 24 hours, entrance to Toledo. Propeller NEW YORK, met with a like detention, same point. Schooner A. C. MAXWELL, lost foremast near Point Au Pellee, bound up. Schooner TOM SIMMS, ashore at Wilson, Lake Ontario; got off. Schooner PATHFINDER, damaged in outfit and lost yawl on Lake Huron. COLCHESTER LIGHTSHIP, broke anchorage and ashore in Pigeon Bay. Brig MECHANIC, lost bowsprit and headgear by collision with bark TWO FANNIES in St. Clair River. Bark TWO FANNIES, lost cathead and jibboom by same collsion. Propeller ROANOKE, damaged by fire in the pilot house, at Detroit; binnacle lamp exploded. Scow SAUGATUCK, struck Chicago crib, and lost bowsprit and jib. Steamboat FRANCES SMITH, broke her safety valve between Collingwood and Owen Sound. Schooner D. L. CONCH (sic), cargo coal, sprung aleak in Lake Erie; arrived at Detroit. Schooners J. C. HARRISON and NEVADA collide in Straits; former lost bowsprit, etc. Schooner NEVADA, sustained serious damage and was towed to Milwaukee. Schooner ST. A boat with three men in it passes over Niagara Falls. Steamer WAVE lost a raft of 16 cribs in Saginaw Bay. Bark CITY OF BUFFALO, cargo of lumber, ashore in Georgian Bay; damage severe; got off and towed to Detroit. Schooner DAN. TINDALL, ashore at White Shoals; jettisoned 2,000 bushels and got off. Bark MARIA MARTIN, ashore on Mission Reef, Mackinaw Island; cargo coal; damaged seriously; jettisoned cargo and got off. Bark J. P. MACK, ashore at Dunkirk; lost mainmast; got off. Tug B. B. JONES, exploded at Port Huron; total loss with 8 lives. A sailing yacht foundered at Cleveland, and three persons drowned. Propeller GRAVES, lost a smokestack by collision on Lake Michigan. Steamer HURON, burned at Beauharnois Canal; one life lost. Schooner SEABIRD, collided with propeller ALASKA in River St. Clair; former damaged seriously. Tug HERO, broke her shaft in River St. Clair. Barge BANNER, lost foremast by stroke of lightning, off Thunder Bay. Steam barge ROUGE, cargo stone, sunk and capsized at Wyandotte; got up. Barge ANNIE, cargo grain, sunk at Dickinson's Landing, Lake Ontario; got up. Schooner CECELIA, collided with Chicago bridge; lost mizzenmast and outfit. A dredge scow capsized at Buffalo; total loss.
