Beeson, Publisher 308 Royal Insurance Bldg, Chicago, IL [110 - 111] VESSELS LOST DURING THE SEASON OF 1899 Below are given the names of 48 Steam and Sail Vessels, mostly American bottoms, lost on the Great Lakes and reported total losses. It is barely possible that in a few cases the vessels marked (*) may be brought into commission again. Such particulars as could be obtained are given; about 55 other vessels met with casualties entailing serious damage. Total losses ior the season are estimated at $625,000 in value as against $1,800,000 in the season of 1898, when the number of vessels damaged was nearly twice as many as in 1899. ------------------------------------------------------------ Schooner AMERICA, September 8, foundered about 35 miles north- east of Chicago, during northerly winds and became a total loss. Value of vessel $200. Tug ANDERSON, BOB, on August 5, burned on Lake Superior. Schooner BADGER,* October 24, went ashore on Green Bay, Lake Michigan. Schooner BENSON, JAMES R. (Canadian), June 20, foundered on Lake Erie. Propeller BESSIE,* August 12, sunk by collision on Detroit River. Schooner BREDEN, JOHN, on July 21, foundered in a heavy north gale off Lexington, Lake Huron, in the fairway of vessels and became a total loss; three of the crew were lost. Estimated value of vessel, $1,000. Tug BRONSON, June 22, burned on St. Lawrence River. Schooner Yacht CHIQUITA, November 2, stranded during heavy weather near Millers Station, Ind., and became a total loss; three lives loss. Value of vessel $500. Schooner CLEVELAND, H. G., August 13, foundered off Cleveland during heavy weather became a total loss; crew rescued. Steam Yacht CONSUELO, July 31, burned on St. Lawrence River. Schooner DeWOLF, DELOS, May 31, coal laden, was caught in a heavy northwest squall off Pelee Island, Lake Erie, stripped of her canvas and drifted over to Cedar Point, where she was sighted next morning by a tug and towed to Sandusky, and there sank; no lives lost. Estimated value of vessel $1,500. Tug DORR, G. J., September 24, with two scows in tow, foundered about 8 miles off South Chicago during heavy weather and became a total loss. Vessel of value $5,000. Schooner EMERY, W. Y. (Canadian), September 26, coal laden - Charlotte to Toronto - dragged anchors on the rocks during heavy weather at Bear Creek. Life-saving crew at Charlotte rescued the crew; reported total loss. Estimated value of vessel $16,000. Tug ERIE, May 19, went ashore at Dunkirk, N.Y. Schooner GANGES, May 18, collided with steamer PRESQUE ISLE, between Colchester and Dummy Light, Lake Erie. Loss on GANGES $4,000. Propeller GORDON, R. J., September 28, burned at Chicago. Schooner GROVER, CRIS, October 25, stranded about 40 miles north of Duluth, and became a total loss. Value of vessel $2,000. Tug HAWLEY, R. K., December 12, sprung a leak during a heavy snowstorm while being towed from Huron to Lorain, O., and foundered 1 mile east-northeast from the Huron piers and became a total loss. Estimated loss on vessel $4,000. Propeller IVANHOE, September 28, burned at Chicago. Schooner LEADER, August 9, sank in Detroit River. Schooner LISGAR (Canadian), September 4, in tow of steamer CLINTON, foundered off Goderich, Ont., during northerly gale, and carried down five lives. The captain and one of the crew succeeded in reaching the yawl-boat and drifted ninety-one hours before being rescued near Thunder Bay Island by the steamer CASE. Estimated value of vessel $2,800. Schooner MARY AMELIA, October 11, sunk by collision on Lake Erie. Schooner MILLER, LAURA, October 8, foundered on Lake Erie. Steam Yacht MILTONIA (Canadian), August 4, burned on St. Lawrence River. Schooner MINCH, SOPHIA,* July 8, went ashore at Ashtabula, O. Propeller MORAN, JOHN V., February 7, was cut down by the ice and abandoned by her crew when about 12 miles off Muske- gon, Mich. It is not known where she finally foundered. Value of vessel $40,000. Schooner MORNING STAR, December 11, stranded during heavy northeast gale on South Fox Island, Lake Michigan, and be- came a total loss; crew rescued. Estimated loss on vessel $1,500. Propeller MUSIC, October 1, burned at Onekama, Mich. Propeller NEFF, S., September 26, burned at Pelee Island, Lake Erie. Schooner NELSON, May 13, in tow of steamer A. FOLSOM, foundered off Grand Marais, Lake Superior. Schooner NELSON, O. M., June 5, driven ashore at south end of Pilot Island, Lake Michigan, during heavy southwest gale and abandoned as a total loss. Value of vessel $1,500. Propeller NIAGARA (Canadian), December 5, lumber laden, foundered east of Long Point, Lake Erie, during heavy gale and snowstorm, carrying down entire crew, numbering 12 lives. Estimated value of vessel $14,000. Propeller OLWILL, MARGARET, loaded with limestone, Kelleys Island for Cleveland, was caught in heavy northeaster, and in attempting to come about and run with the gale, the wheel- chains parted and the vessel foundered 8 miles off Lorain, carrying down 8 of the 12 persons on board; total loss. Estimated value of vessel $11,000. The four survivors were rescued by the captains of the steamers STATE OF OHIO and SACRAMENTO. Propeller ONTARIO (Canadian), August 10, stranded at Ross- port, Lake Superior, during a dense fog and became a total loss; crew rescued. Estimated value of vessel $15,000. Tug PILOT, July 30, burned on Green Bay, Lake Michigan. Propeller POINT ABINO (Canadian), December 11, coal laden, stranded on Ballast Island reef during heavy weather; total loss. Estimated damage $3,000. Schooner PONTOON, September 26, dismasted in northeast gale off Lorain, O., and went ashore at the breakwater, becoming a total loss; crew rescued. Estimated loss on vessel $400. Tug RED CLOUD, September 3, while coming out of Sandusky harbor was caught in northeast gale, stranded at the piers and went to pieces. Value of vessel $5,000. Schooner RISING STAR,* October 22, sunk in Chicago River. Tug RUELLE, GRACE A., July 29, foundered in the fairway of vessels, between Sand Beach and Pointe Aux Barques, Lake Huron, and became a total loss. The crew attempted to reach shore on a raft and after floating for some hours the captain tried to swim ashore and was drowned. Estimated loss on vessel $2,000. Tug SATISFACTION, June 25, burned on Lake Michigan. Schooner SAVIDGE, HUNTER, August 20, laying becalmed off Point Aux Barques, was caught in a sudden squall, capsized and five lives were loss. Value of vessel $3,500. Propeller STEWART, R. G., June 3, ashore on Michigan Island, Lake Superior, during dense fog; afterwards took fire and became a total loss; one life lost. Estimated value of vessel $7,500. Tug STONE CITY,* October 19, went ashore on Green Bay, Lake Michigan. Propeller TILLEY, SIR S. L., (Canadian), August 26, burned on Lake Erie. Propeller TORRENT, NELLIE, June 23, burnned on St. Mary's River. Schooner TYPO, October 14, in collision with the steamer W. P. KETCHAM, on Lake Huron, sank immediately carrying down four of the crew. Estimated value of vessel $6,000. Schooner WAVE CREST, December 7, coal laden, Charlotte to Toronto, driven ashore off Oak Orchard, Ont.; crew rescued. Vessel probably total loss.
