BURKE, aged 65, widely known as a Great Lakes captain, died at his home in Escanaba, Mich., Thursday of last week. CAPTAIN BURKE became widely known for his heroic work in saving the lives of four sailors caught on the end of No. 4 ore dock at Escanaba when the structure was destroyed by fire in December 1898. The steamer Nayhant, iron ore carrier, was lying near the dock on a bleak December night when it caught fire. Four members of its crew left the boat and went on the dock, which later became ablaze, entrapping the men. As the fire on the dock spread, the steamer Iroquois, in command of CAPT. BURKE, along with other boats, backed from the dock out into the bay. CAPT. BURKE spied the four men calling for help on the burning dock. He brought his boat back to the dock, and playing a stream of water on the bow, which touched the dock, effected the rescue of the sailors. ========================================================================== If you've reached this file through a SEARCH, you can access more of our growing collection of FREE online information by going to the following URL: http://www.us-data.org/ ==========================================================================
