JAMES R. KING at his home at 997 Pipestone street, came the passing of one of Benton Harbor's best known lake-faring men. CAPT. KING died at 11:55 o'clock in the evening following an illness of seven months duration. He was 69 years and eight months old. Death came as the direct result of a stroke of para- lysis sustained two weeks ago. Nineteen years a sailor on the Great Lakes, CAPT. KING was well known among shipping men in all the important ports touching on lake waters. For eight years he skippered the schooner "Lizzie Doke," (sic - Doak) As commissary agent for the Graham & Morton Transportation company during the 14 years just preceding his illness he added to his wide circle of friends. Born in St. Joseph on December 21, 1853, CAPT. KING dwelt there until 17 years ago when he moved to Benton Harbor. He early felt the call of the lakes and spent most of his life on the water. On July 28, 1886, CAPT. KING was married to ELLA MATTISON of Bridgman, who survives him. To them were born two sons, JOHN and JAMES. All his life CAPT. KING has been a devout Christian, being a member of the Congregational church. Funeral Wednesday Funeral services will be held from the home on Pipestone street Wednesday after- noon at 3:30 o'clock with Rev. A. C. DIEFENBACH officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joseph City cemetery. Surviving CAPT. KING are: his wife, ELLA KING; two sons, JOHN of Chicago, and JAMES of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Miss JESSIE KING, who has been at the home here during the captain's illness, and Mrs. ROBERT JOHNSON, and a brother, THOMAS KING.
