It has one grist mill and one store. Shipments are wheat, hay, oats, bark and wood. Distance to Traverse City, its railroad shipping station, 40 miles; Elk Rapids, the county seat, is 22 miles south. It is on the east shore of Grand Traverse bay, 17 miles north from Elk Rapids, the county seat, and 36 from Traverse City, the nearest point reached by rail. It is in Elk Rapids township in the south- western corner of the county, and is at the mouth of Elk river, the outlet of Elk and Torch lakes. It has a blast furnace, a large saw mill, a grist mill, a bank, a weekly paper, the Traverse Bay Eagle, also a $12,000 brick school house. Traverse City is its railroad ship- ping station. SPENCER CREEK ------------- A hamlet of 24 inhabitants, in Helena township, Antrim county, 8 miles due east of Elk Rapids, the county seat, and 12 miles west of Mancelona, the nearest station, on the G.R. & I.R.R. It is in a timbered country. The productions are wheat, corn, oats and potatoes. Lumber is the manufacture, and lumber, logs and cordwood are the ship- ments. It has a weekly mail. R. W.
