The poorhouse is about eight miles from Harrisville, the county seat. It is an old frame house about 24x34, two stories high, with a plank cellar about 16x34 feet, and a wing about 16x30 feet for the keeper, who uses also a large dining-room in the main part. For the paupers there are a dining and sitting room about 12x16, and a bed-room 10x12 feet, with two beds. In the second story there are four rooms about 12 feet square. No provision for bathing. The water-closets are outside and very offensive. Fo (sic) provision for female paupers. Have but few paupers, only two when visited, one old man of seventy-three at work, and an imbecile of eighteen unable to do anything. The building is warmed by stoves, ventilated by windows.
