R. Page & Co., - 1883 [270] SPRINGPORT ---------- Springport, or South Harrisville, is situate about one mile south of Harrisville village, on Lake Huron. The business houses of this little hamlet consist of a store and mill, owned by JOSEPH VAN BUSKIRK, Esq., and the residences of his employes, with the excellent dock, etc. It is also the location of his beautiful residence and grounds (see sketch herewith) and his considerable farming operations in con- nection with lumbering. It is also the location of the schoolhouse of District No. 3 and the center of considerable trade from the farming district west of it. The location is considerably elevated and commands a fine view of the lake in a southerly direction. [Transcriber's Note: The lengthy description of the residence of JOSEPH VAN BUSKIRK has not been transcribed as the dimensions of the rooms and color of the paint would not be of benefit to researchers. Instead we offer this extraction: The walls were of pressed brick and the dwelling constructed in Swiss-Gothic style architecture. Water to the kitchen was supplied by lead pipes running from the bottom of two thirty-barrel cisterns which collected water running off the roof. The building was designed by N. J. GIBBS, Esq., of Mount Clemens. ELIAS STOCKWELL, also of Mount Clemons, was the master builder. The plastering was done under the supervision of THOMAS COLLINS, of Harrisville, and W. G. RECHON of Au Sable did the painting, while A. J. FULLER, also of Au Sable accomplished the tin roofing and the cave troughing.] ===========================================================================
