R. Page & Co., - 1883 [274] GEO. W. BALCH, proprietor of a meat market, billiard saloon, etc., at Harrisville, was born in the town of Granger, Allegany County, N.Y., in the year 1846. In 1861, at the breaking out of the war, he enlisted in the Seventy-sixth Regiment, New York Volun- teers, and was afterward transferred to the Ninety-third Regiment. He remained in the service about a year. In the Spring of 1868 he came to Harrisville and worked in the mill that season. He after- ward was engaged at fishing and working in the woods. He then took up a homestead and lived on it six years, at the end of which time he went to Alcona and built the Union Hotel, which he kept until the summer of 1877 when he returned to Harrisville. He now has a meat market and also runs a billiard room.
