The building was erected in 1895 at a cost of $50,000, and the value of the equipment may have been $10,000 more. There was no insurance on the building, as it has been contrary to the policy of the city for nearly 20 years to carry insurance upon any of its buildings. The annex to the school, which is not yet completed and will cost $60,000, was saved by energetic work on the part of the fire department. Fortunately the annex is so far completed as to be roofed in, and the snow on the roof afforded protection against the sparks from the burning building. The two buildings are connected by a corridor, and the firemen found their severest task in preventing the spread of the fire to the annex by way of this corridor. ================================================================================
