SHEPHERD, Killed at Springfield, Wife of Scalper's Ex-chief. MRS. ELEANOR SHEPHERD, 41, wife of WILLIAM H. SHEPHERD, division passenger agent of the Boston and Maine railroad, was shot at her home in Springfield, Saturday morning, by GEORGE CRELEY, father of MR. SHEPHERD'S first wife. MRS. SHEP- HERD died within 15 minutes, the bullet having entered the side of the face and severed the jugular vein. MRS. SHEPHERD was well known at the Lake through frequent visits there, MR. SHEP- HERD being a former high chief of the scalpers. Only a week ago Sunday MRS. SHEPHERD delivered the address at the presentation of a flag to the order by the wives of the members. The crime was that of an insane man, MR. CRELEY, who made his home with the SHEPHERDS, having been known to be suffering from mental aberration for some time. He had shown no tendency toward vio- lence, his mania being confied to a belief that he was sick. An attempt had been made to have him go voluntarily to the Northampton asylum, but he declined to go. The funeral was held at the SHEPHERD residence in Springfield yesterday, Rev. Ernest S. Staples conducting the service. Charles M. Blackford, of Lake Pleasant, was one of the bearers. The burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. ================================================================================
