Scoon to Aunt "Famey" (Scoon) Witherell ====================================================================== Camp of the 113th Ill. Vol. Memphis Tenn April 28th, '64 Dear Aunt As William is not here at presant I will take it upon myself to answer your kind and Welcome Letter which I received for him a short time since, he is at home at presant on a furlough, but will soon rejin us gain. I received a letter from him a few days ago and one also from Sister Effie, our folks were all well at the time they wrote they were very busy getting in their Springs crop. Dear Aunt we all sympathise [page 2] with you very much in your troubles. I do wish you and Uncle Thomy would come out to Illinois and live with our folks. if you say you will come we will send you plenty of money to come with, but if you dont come until this War is over Will and myself are comeing down there after you, that is if we come out of this scrape with whole hides, how is Isaac and Walter. I have not heard directly from them in four months or more. I hope they keep in good health for good health is one of the freatest blessing a Soldier can have. We have all been sick since we enlisted but not so much as a good many others. We have been quite fortianate so far. William halth was not very good when he enlisted but it [page 3] has been better since he has been a Soldier than it was for some time before. at Vicksburg John and myself were both taken with what is called the Swamp fever. John soon got over it but I was sick with it for four months then I got a furlough and went home as soon as I got good care taken off me I soon got well and now I am as well as ever. how long has Isaac and Walter been in the service have they been home yet. do they think of reenlisting. I dont believe it will be of any use to reenlist now for it seems to be the prevailing oppinion here that the War will not last longer than next Winter and if it does which I hope it will our time will be very near out [page 4] whereas if they reenlist they will have to serve three years longer and that looks to me to be a long time, as soon as our time is out we can joyn the dear ones we have left at home but to some it will bring sorrow for some loved one that has fallen in the conflict. Aunt Famey I guess you are tired of wreading this uninteresting letter so I will bring this to a close by hopeing to hear from you soon and much oblige your lovering nephew Serg't James P.
