McCollom, 98th N.Y.I., to his father ========================================================================== May the 28th 1862 Dear Father I take my pen in hand to let you know that I am a live yet but dont now how long I will be but I dont think there is much danger yet but we are a fight ing in every direction from us and rebles all around us but we lick them every time yester day we had a fight and licked them but dont now how maney we kild but they ***dled and our men are gathering up the prisners to day they gathered up about four hundred prisners to day and I expect a grate ma ney more than that for there was a grate ** fighting a goin on yesterday and some to day and more expected to morow and untill reble dom is dead and peace is declared and that will a time of joy and hapiness to yong and old. Such days I never want to See again but thirty days more will tell the Story and I think that I Shall be at home a gainst the fourth of july next so tell mary [scratched out word] tell not to be scart about me I am all wright the rumat** for a few days past but I am around ever day but not so as to do doobies(??) this is most all that I can write now for I expect that we will move yet this after noon I received your leter a bout ten days ago and was glad to here from you and one from Mary the Same time all Seemed to be right then but I dont think they are at S***s Since Charley has not maried I under Stand that the old woman has had to leave home to live in peace but god knows whare she found it if She did I should like to now whare it was fore never Saw the place yet that She Could now you say that you think of going Oregon thare is a good place but I think you had beter hold on untill I Come home and then I will go with you a year from this Spring and I think you wont be ready be fore that time and then I will be redy Cased and primed the trip So keep easey untill you heare from me again and then I will tell you more about it please write soon as you get this and oblige me yours truly A.R.
