                                  Camp near Petersburg, Va
                                  May 16th, 1865
                                  
                                  Dear Brother
                     Your letter of the 21 I received
                     while we were on the march and
                     have not had time to answer
                     sooner  We started to go to North
                     Carolina and Before we got
                     there we got the news that
                     Johnson had surendered and then
                     we came Back to where we
                     are now  we Expect to go to
                     Washington soon to be mustered
                     out of service  I think we shall
                     soon Be home it may not Be
                     untill the first of July But
                     I should think Before  I suppose
                     you have heard that the vilin
                     that killed the President has
                     Been killed  he had not as good
                     luck in getting away as a good

                     to Do and Cannot write
