From Demerest D. Hunter to his sister

                                    Camp Federal Hill
                                    Baltimore, Dec 28th, 1861
                                    
                        Dear Sister,
                                    I received your
                        letter yesterday enclosing $8
                        for which I am very much
                        obliged,  You may expect me
                        back to Scotch Plains next
                        Wednesday or Thursday night
                        as I can not get my furlough
                        signed before that time,
                        but if I am alive & well
                        you may expect me home
                        then.  I will try & get one
                        for 10 days but I think it
                        doubtful if I get one for
                        over a week, but that is
                        better than none.
                        I do not think Harry Bates
                        can get one to come with 
                        me as only one is allowed

                        We are all well and in 
                        good spirits.  I think I will
                        spend New Years in Baltimore
                        but would like better to spend
                        it at home.  Enclosed I send
                        you a piece cut out of the
                        Baltimore paper to show you
                        some of our boys pranks.  Read
                        & ponder on it.
                        I have no time to spare as
                        I must write out my furlough
                        soon & send it to Gen. Dix.
                        Give my love to all.  Write
                        soon.
