Hunter to his grandmother =========================================================================== Camp Federal Hill Baltimore, Dec 25th, 1861 Dear Grandmother, A Merry Christmas and hope you may live to see many of them. I received your letter a few days ago and embrace the first favorable opportunity to anser it to let you know I am well and have lived to see a very pleasant Christmas day, as the sun shines beautifully and it is quite warm, a great change from yesterday and the day before. We have at last got in our new quarters in the barracks and it is very comfortable indeed with a fire and completely sheltered from the weather, much different from being in a tent and no protection from the wind and cold. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 2 Mother sent me in *** bag a nice comfort which came very handy to me and was of great benefit. Robert Walpole one of the 3d N. J. Reg fro Scotch Plains was to see me on Sunday and staide over night. He had been home on a furlough of 9 days and was just returning to duty. There is nothing of any importance going on in Baltimore, the s***- sionists having cooled down & do not dare to own they are such a person, in fact I have never met but one man that owned up to it and he was drunk & in spite of the bad name which the city bears, it is much quieter & peacable than N.* ever was or thought of being. Only 4 companies of our regiment --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 3 have been paid off and they were paid while we were in Accomac Co, so I cannot pay you money as yet but will do so as soon as I receive it. How does Grandfather get along? I hope he will recover and once more get the use of his limbs. Give my love to all the folks and enquiring friends write as soon as convenient to Your Affect Grandson Demarest ===========================================================================
