We had a fight on that day our Division had about four hundred wounded it took us untill dark to get them off the field then we had about three hundred wounded Rebs to bring off I worked all night untill 8 oclock the next morning picking them up I was tired enough I tell you our Division ****** about eight hundred Rebels in front of them they got whipped badly they lost about (6000) six thousand in that days fight the loss of our Corps was about 1900, nineteen hundred in all three of the Divisions they attacked Gen McPhersons on the 22nd but got the worst of it We lost Gen McPherson which --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 2 is a Severe loss on our part Since the fight of the 20th we have been taking the wounded back to the Rail Road on the other Side of the Chattahoochie River about nine miles from here we have had to go five times before we got them all there. Since that our Division has been on the extreme Right Supporting a Division of the 14th Corps the come back to their old position yesterday. the day before we went on to the right McPhersons old command had a Severe fight with the Rebs. they gave the Rebs an awful whipping they charged our men three times one Rebel Regt had 190 men killed dead the Regt that fought them had only Six men wounded another had 160 killed I went on to the Battle field the next day after the fight I see two hundred dead Rebs that they had not buried yet they Set niggers to work that night burying them. they smelt bad. I have no news of any importance to write. I have two letters from you one July 11th & 17th I guess I have got all the letters --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 3 for the Division it is lucky for once it has not been in any fights lately well I will close by giving my love to all from William Called for Short Bill ************************************************************ (this portion was written by Lizzie) Sister Jane Sudbury Aug 21st, 1864 this is the third letter I have wrote today I am tired beside all that I have got the side ache but I feel as though it was my duty to write a few lines I am having a very pleasant time here Ida has been sick all day she complains of a pain in her side and shoulder and has since friday I don't know what it is Georgie is as happy as a clam in high water how does Father & Mother do and are they having a good time I hope they be when are they going home and how is Nancy is her hand sore you know you wrote that she had a sore on her finger or hand I dont know which the girls come over last Friday we shall go back two weeks from tuesday that will be the 6th day of Sept we shall have a house full of folks the rest of our stay you must write to me Jane now dont fail for I have not heard from the folks since they went from Lowell I am in a hurry and I guess you will think so by the writing I wish you was here we have a nice swing up in the Ri*ers grove I think you would enjoy it Ida and Georgie send their love to Grandpa & Grandmother give my love to all and excuse this scribble be sure and write this is the only letter I had from Bill tell Nancy to write goodbye from your sister Lizzie ===========================================================================
