We are laying here in front of Atlanta yet I do not know how long we shall be before we get into the City it was thought this morning that they had left but I guess they have not as our folks have commenced shelling the City again. I have not heard from Frank but once Since he went away he was in Jeffersonville Ind then in the hospital I have written to him once but he has not answered it yet --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 2 I shall direct this letter to Lowell I do not know whether you will be there or not you wrote that you should come home the first of Sept and this will not get there before that time you wanted to know who this Page is. it is Ira Page he worked in the Lawrence Corp he is married he is not the one that lived at the guard l**cks that was Henry Page. Liz I wrote to Nancy a short time ago to send me some letter paper & envelopes I thought you would be over home and she would have a better chance to get it then you would I do not know as she will Send but presume She will I do not know as we shall ever get paid there is only one thing I want money for that is tobacco I can not get any all the rest of the --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 3 P.S. that breaking out is all right now I have just heard that our Regt is not going to Howards I do not know whether it is so or not it is said Sherman would not aprove of it boys are the same I should like to have you send me some tobacco by mail if you can I do not see how it is that you have to pay more postage in Lowell on things of that kind then they do any where else one man in our Regt had three large hands come by mail the other day and all the postage was 26 cts quite a number of boys in the ambulance corps have had this fine cut chewing tobacco sent a pound at a time and all the postage was on it was 14 cts I think now if you can send me a couple pounds of fine cut chewing tobacco without discomading yourself I should like to have you I do not suppose you have --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 4 got any money to spare but I shall be paid Some time I hope if you send any send it in one pound packages send one pound at one time and one at another and then I shall be likely to get one if not both. the boys feel very bad about Hooks leaving he was thought a great deal of I understand that our Regt is transferd to the army of the Tennesee it is going to Gen Howards head Quarters as his Head Quarters Guards he wanted the Band and he could not get it unless he took the Regt with it I am glad they have got it for they have had hard times enough I do not know whether I shall have to go or not My Lt told me yesterday that if I wanted to stay he would see the Col and have me stay for he wanted me it will not make much difference any way all we shall have to do will be guard duty Well I will close for this time give my love to all to Father & Mother Wheeler if you are there and except this from your William ===========================================================================
