Aug 8 '63 My Dear Wife I am well as usual we are in camp in the woods near the railroad there is only a very few houses here and most of them are empty it has ben very warm we come from Warranton Last Saturday it was the warmest day we have had we do not get the mail only once in a while have got a few papers and letters the 40th Reg went to Alexandria the other day guess they have gone south if Frank goes with them he will have a hard time I am afraid Lieut. Whitaker and Sargent Fenton have died of their wounds since I wrote Emeline knew Fentons wife he went home and got married a short time ago we have [page 2] ben paid yet but expect to be soon I got your letter of July 31st and four stamps you speak of bu*ying things there is nothing about here the land is groing up to briars I went into a house the other day the woman had five children she said they were most starved out if they plant anything the soldiers steal it there is nothing new here no fighting I don't think there will be untill it is cooler if I was a young man I would not get Exempted if I would what is the use of being affraid come out & give them fits hope the war will end this season as I do not want to stay another winter we may not have another battle but I think we may have one more hard one in Virginia it depends some on hew we get along at [page 3] Charleston if it is A****n it will discourage them more than anny thing else none of our wounded have come back yet some of them never will. I have not heard from ** ***** do not know where he is we live about the same as ever have part of the time fresh meat 2 times a week Bacon the rest we have drilled only 3 times the last month there was a talk of our going back to Washington to recruit but I guess not we have 58 less men then we had at first it does not seem like the same battery Love to All D.
