He developed bronchitus and then double/triple pneumonia along with other complications. His immediate family was at his side. All were present when Rev. Clifford's viewing was held April 15, 2003 at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Mesa, which included a Masonic Funeral Ritual. Three officers of the Fraternal Order of Police presented Ingrid with a beautiful white leather and gold-edged Bible in Clifford's memory. She was also presented with the American Flag. Preceding the viewing, family members, close relatives and friends gathered at 'Annabelle's' for a luncheon to celebrate Clifford's life. Clifford was born March 19, 1919 in Orange County, Indiana. He was the third son of four sons to the late Lowell (Knight) and Orville Connell. He graduated from West Baden Springs High School in West Baden in 1937. As a youth he did caddy-work at thehuge local hotel for the 'rich' golfers and his dad helped keep the greens in good condition. Clifford loved to golf and also enjoyed his basketball-playing days in high school. After graduation, he followed his two older brothers to Indianapolis where work was plentiful. He worked for Zimmer Paper Products and as an insurance agent for Washington National. He enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard in April 1942 and after basic training was shipped immediately to Hawaii without leave, where he remained for two years. After a month's leave, he was sent to the Munising Coast Guard Station at Sand Point where he was stationed for six months. He was then sent to Groton, Connecticut and to San Diego, California where he was discharged as Electrician's Mate 1st Class in October 1945. He returned to Munising, working for a short time at the Munising Woodenware and then at the Munising Paper Company for 15 years in the Data Processing Dept. On Oct. 4, 1947, he married Ingrid Baij, daughter of the late John and Dicka Baij of Munising. Clifford was Past Master and Lifetime member of the Grand Island Masonic Lodge #422 in Munising. Clifford and Ingrid and their two daughters Christine and Patricia, moved to Phoenix, Arizona in the early 60's. In Phoenix, Clifford worked for Reynolds Metals, City of Phoenix and Motorola in Data Processing for many years. The last 10 years, before he retired in 1983, he was with Arizona Dept. of Transportation as a driver's license examiner, mostly in the Scottsdale office. Clifford and Ingrid sold their home in Phoenix, and moved to a mobile home park in Apache Junction, AZ in December 1990. Clifford was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.), Arizona Saguero Lodge #23. He enjoyed bowling and golfing while at Motorola and in Munising. Clifford was living at the Apache Junction Health Care Center, Apache Junction from September 24, 2002 until his death on April 10, 2003.
