He was standing at the elevator hatchway, and a piece of lumber used by the workmen to stand on while oiling the machinery at the top of the ele- vator became loosened in some manner and fell end foremost down the opening, striking the lad upon the head and crushing in his skull. He lived but a few moments. The piece of plank has been in use for a long time at the elevator and was regarded as perfectly safe. The shop was closed out of respect to the parents, the father being foreman of the shop. Deceased was a great favorite among the workmen. Coroner Stratford went out yester- day and took evidence in the case, finding the facts as above given. ==========================================================================
