A. F. BROWN, 55, COAST GUARD VETERAN, IS DEAD. Capt. ALBERT F. BROWN, who directed the rescue of hundreds of persons in the 15 years he had charge of the South Chicago coast guard station, died yesterday afternoon, a few hours after he was taken to the Marina hos- pital. He had been ill about a year and was 55 years old. Capt. BROWN was born at Ludington, Mich., and was taken to the Cana light- house off the Washington shore when his father assumed charge there. For several years he was a sailor on great lakes schooners until 1901, when he entered the coast guard service at Sturgeon Bay, Wis. He became No. 1 surfman here and in 1919 was placed in charge of the South Chicago station. Capt. BROWN aided in the rescue of all of the 14 men aboard a stone barge which foundered off Sturgeon Bay, and directed the saving of 7 men when the sand sucker Desmond sank near Chicago with the loss of 13 lives about 15 years ago. Surviving Capt. BROWN are his widow, LORENZA, four sons and four daughters. Funeral plans are to be announced later. ==========================================================================
